Reptiles - Snakes : Pacific Gopher Snake
Pituophis catenifer catenifer
This is all I saw of the first Pacific Gopher Snake I encountered at Rockville Hills Regional Park.

This guy was sunning on the main trail. Since I could hear other people coming up behind me, I passed him and hoped that would encourage him to move along. He finally got all the way across and headed into the weeds as the next people rounded the corner. I figured it would be nicer to warn them about the snake than have them suddenly see it and freak out!

This guy was on the Devil's Backbone Trail. He was at least 4 or 5 feet long.

Yes! It's a baby! And a striped morph. Striped morphs of Pacific Gopher Snakes are actually fairly common in Solano County. This one is 12-14 inches and was probably warming up in the sun.

Bye, and thanks for all the pictures!
